With Thread protocol technology, connecting those devices is easier than ever. First, you need the right devices. This list of our favorite Thread-enabled smart home devices has everything you might want.
What Is Thread Protocol And How Does It Work?
Thread protocol is a Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) designed to connect over 100+ low-bandwidth devices seamlessly. It requires simple installation and operation and has a very efficient battery capacity. A Border Router connects to the Thread network (and other networks), giving remote access capabilities and wider connectivity. It's a fast, reliable, efficient, and scalable system.

Why Is Thread Protocol Important For A Smart Home?
One of the primary benefits of Thread protocol is that it utilizes less energy than Wi-Fi. Not only is the reduced energy use beneficial for the environment, but it can also result in lower energy bills.
Additionally, the Thread protocol makes it easy for devices to connect. Without the additional component of a Wi-Fi router, there are less vulnerable points in the connection. Your devices will remain connected even if your Wi-Fi goes out.

How Do I Connect A Thread-Enabled Smart Home Device To Smart Hubs?
There are a couple of different hubs out there. While they operate similarly, it can be helpful to understand how to connect your devices to each of the most popular hubs.
Aqara Home
You can connect up to 127 Thread/Zigbee devices to the Aqara Hub M3. To begin, download the Aqara Home app using your Wi-Fi connection. Plug in the Aqara Hub M3, and make sure it's powered up. Tap the "+" icon in the upper right-hand corner of the Aqara Home App; the device should automatically appear at the top of the list. If it doesn't, you can search for it in the list of devices. Once you've found Aqara Hub M3 in the list, select it. Follow the connection instructions stated on the app.
Apple Home
Apple HomeKit uses Thread devices directly. No separate pairing is needed if you have a Thread border router like an Apple HomePod mini or newer Apple TV 4K. To know if your device is Thread-enabled, you can see the Thread icon and "Work on Apple Homekit" on its packaging.
Using the Home app, you'll be able to easily locate your available devices. If your Thread device requires a separate app for initial setup, follow those instructions first. Then, the device should automatically show up in the Home app.
Google Home
Google Home currently requires a separate bridge and a Matter hub with Thread Border Router functionality to connect Thread devices. To set up your Google Home system, you'll need to download the Google Home app. In the app, you will follow the instructions to set up your Google Home, such as entering a nickname and your address (or you can opt out of the address).
Once your Hub is configured, press the "Add" button to connect local devices. Once you connect devices to Google Home, you'll be able to control them through the app. You'll also be able to use voice control to complete some tasks. Google Home comes with advanced knowledge compared to other options.
